What have We Learned about Bees So Far?

So, what did we learn in Meet the Incredible Bee?  

  1. There are 20,000 species of Bees, and only 7 of them are Honey Bees. 
  1. A Bee is defined as a winged, hairy-bodied insect that feeds on the pollen, nectar, or oils of flowers.   
  1. Bees and Wasps are very closely related, but there are a few differences in their appearance, the way they raise their young, and their behaviour.    
  1. There are seven families of bees that are split into three groups: Short-tongued, Medium-tongued, and Long-tongued.
  • Apidae – Honey Bees, Bumblebees, Cuckoo Bees  
  • Halictidae – Sweat Bees  
  • Megachillidae – Orchid Bees, Mason bees, Leaf-Cutter Bees 
  • Andrenidae – Mining Bee 
  • Colletidae – Plasterer Bees 
  • Melittidae – Oil Bees 
  • Stenotritidae –  Australian Mining Bees
